Question

I'm in the process of getting ready to go back to work and I would like to keep breast feeding as long as possible. I've been looking at breast pumps because I know that my hand pump wont keep my supply strong enough to keep breast feeding for as long as I'd like to (12 months if I can manage) and I'm finding that breast pumps are not a cheap item to come by. I've found a few at places like Wal-mart or Wal-greens in the $30-$50 range but I don't know if they are just going to be a waste of money. It seems like everyone else sells pumps for $150-$250 and I'm not sure if they are cheaper because they are single pumps or if it's just because they are poorer quality. I don't know if it's something I really need to invest good money into or if a cheaper one will suffice. I'm also looking for one that will potentially last through all of my future children. I don't want to have to replace it each time I get pregnant.

Does anyone know of a good brand or a good way to find one that will do it's job and last a few years but wont cost me a house payment to buy?

Thanks,

Cheris Vreeken

My mom was a lactation specialist at the hospital here for a few years and now is a labor and delivery nurse and says that Medella is the only way to go. All other brands are equal to a fish tank pump. They are expensive but I figured that the benefits would more then pay for the self. The cost is equal to about 11 weeks of formula so in the end even though you shell out a huge chunk of change, it'll pay for itself 5 times over in the end. I'm planning on buying one and even if I have difficulty breastfeeding I'll pump do to the health benefits and the amount of money I'll save.

Yup, I have a Medella double (I got it through insurance due to some problems with Jeff). It is fabulous. If you are going to work a full 8-10 hour day and not come home and nurse, you'll need a double electric to keep up your supply. When you compare it to formula it is definatley worth it. I've heard if you qualify for WIC they will pay for you to get a Medalla pump. Something to think about. BTW I like the new blog. I'll send you something soon.

Yep. Medella. This is not a place to go cheap.

Medella has a double and a single. I looked at the "Swing" but it's just a single and so it would take twice as long if you're pumping during lunch or a break or something. The "Pump in Style" is a double.

I have a Purely Your's pump. I heard it was better than Medella. I had to get it from a durable medical equipment store. But that is because I went through my insurance. You might want to look into your coverage. If you have durable medical equipment coverage...it might be covered. I think I paid like $30 for mine after insurance. I have Regence..so I know they cover it.

Thanks ibchiro!!! It's crazy how much stuff there is on this!!! We've changed our insurance recently so I don't know what they'll say but I'm gonna try to see if I can get on medicade/WIC tomorrow. Do you like yours or would you recommend going to something else?

I used a Medella pump and it was wonderful. There is a huge difference in other brand of pumps, especially the cheap ones. I was fortunated enough that a friend loaned me one. It was just a single but it did the job fast enough for me. I don't know how expensive it is but there are some hospitals that you can rent the pumps. I don't know if it will save you any money but it may. You might want to look into that option as well.

Yeah I was thinking about renting but I'm also wondering if I should invest in a nice one because I'm hoping to make it a one time purchase. I'm glad that every seems to find one brand that they like. I was afraid that I would get 50 different brands and have to start from square one. I have a Medela manual pump but it's just not going to work for what I need. Thank you for your reply!!! I'm hoping to make a purchase next week!!!

I know this was posted a while ago but I wanted to let everyone know how I got a double medela pump for a lot cheaper. I went on ebay and bought a used pump for $50 and then I went to Target and bought my own bottles and breast sheilds and all of the accessories that I needed. Most hospitals use the medela brand and they let their employees use the pumps that they have you just have to go and buy your own accessories and they supply the pump so I figure its okay to use the used pump as long as I bought my own accessories.

Good advice. I had heard of people doing that recently I just didn't know where to start looking. Thank you for sharing that. I'm going to start looking there to see what I can find!!!

I love the medella harmony...it is a hand pump but it WORKS! I have the hospital one and I dont like to use it cause you have to plug it in and its loud and it doesnt work for me. The hand pump let me get 6 oz in 10 min on both sides...that is a lot for me because I never had a lot of milk.
